Nintendo Wii Remote Support

Digg this!

(08-05-2007) Robodance has support for the Nintendo Wii Remote control!  You can see it being demonstrated fully in this YouTube video where I control a Robosapien V2 robot using arm gestures.

Here’s a link to a Nintentdo Wii/i-SOBOT video that shows me controlling my i-SOBOT robot using arm gestures and a Nintendo Wii!

When combined with Robodance’s voice control system (speech recognition), controlling even complex robots like the Robosapien V2 with Robodance and the Wii Remote is ten times more fun and much easier!

Advantages of using the Wii Remote:

  • Robot control is much easier and more fun

  • Use just one remote and your voice to control ALL supported WowWee robots

  • Wii Remote is wireless so you can hide it when doing skits for friends and family along with terrorizing the family pets.

(02-28-3006) IMPORTANT!: Robodance version 4 is now available!  The new version has these major new features:

  • Support for many new robots including the Tomy/Takara i-SOBOT. Currently supported i-SOBOT, Homersapien, Robopet, Roboraptor, Roboreptile, Robosapien, Robosapien V2,  and Spidersapien,

  • The ability to share scripts you create, and instantly download scripts created by others directly from within the software, via our web server

  • The ability to transfer scripts to your robot, so they can run free from the PC (with limitations).

  • Support for the Lego Mindstorms Serial Tower as well as the USB UIRT.

UPDATE 03-13-2007: Do not buy any infrared devices or anything else if your intent is to use Robodance with the Robosapien RS Media.  Since WowWee has added a sophisticated scripting software package of their own, I have no definite plans to add support for this robot at this time.  You can subscribe to the newsletter if you want to be notified of any changes in my plans.

Use the subscription box below and I’ll send you the necessary details to download the latest version of Robodance.

News and update(s)

I am extremely happy to announce that Robosapien Dance Machine is SourceForge’s Project Of The Month for May 2005!

NEWS UPDATE (12-2-2005): The Robosapien V2 is finally shipping worldwide!

I have one of the Sharper Image ones and I really love it. I have begun updating Robosapien Dance Machine to support the Robosapien V2.  I have already added support for the Robopet, Mark Tilden’s robotic dog.  After I add support for the V2 I will then add support for the Roboraptor, the robot dinosaur also invented by Mark Tilden.

I am very excited because the V2 has an extremely versatile joint structure which allows me to script interesting and graceful humanoid motions with him.  This will allow me to use Robosapien Dance Machine’s advanced scripting capability, to create comedy plays that are much richer and nuanced then I could with the original Robosapien. In addition. the V2 has a wide variety of spoken utterance (pre-recorded speech), and that will make comedic interactions with him more life-like and seem much more advanced.  This is in contrast to the endearing but limited caveman grunts that the original Robosapien has.

Stay tuned and check back frequently.  When the first Robosapien Dance Machine comedy video is ready, that uses the Robosapien V2, I will post a big announcement here. Some time after that I will post a publicly available version of Robosapien Dance Machine that has the support for the new WowWee Toys robots.

(April 2005) VOICE ACTIVATED SCRIPTS! - The Voice Control system has undergone a HUGE upgrade.  You can now create interactive dialogues with your robot that easily create the illusion of advanced intelligence!

In the previous version, speech recognition capability was added, thanks to the powerful CMU Sphinx 3.5 speech engine. This allowed you to replace the cumbersome 67 function remote control with your voice.  Although extremely cool, it is nothing compared to the power of Voice Activated Scripting, which allows you to create your own Voice Commands and have them trigger any script that you like.  To get a juicy taste of what you can do with this feature, take a quick look at “The Art of Voice Activated Scripts” now, and try not to drool!

(April 2005) VOICE CONTROLLED ROBOSAPIEN AVAILABLE! The latest release of the Robosapien Dance Machine allows you to control your robot using only your voice as well as create super scripts to make your Robsapien do things you never thought possible!  This same voice control ability will be extended to the Robosapien V2 in the near future.

(February 28, 2005) - The program and the documentation files are finished. Once the installation program is completed, the Alpha version of the project will be released today or tomorrow.

You can see the help documentation now, which will give you an idea of what the software does and what it looks like.

The following sites can give you more information on topics related to but not directly concerning the Robodance software package and required hardware components.  Use at your own risk but certainly give them a look if they cover a topic of interest to you.

Robodance will support the new Ultimate Wall-E robot when it is available. It is driven by an infrared remote control so the odds are good that I'll be able to operate it fully from Robodance. Still unknown is whether or not the WowWee Rovio spy robot will be supported since it is an 802.11 home monitoring device and not controlled by an infrared remote control.
